National Incident Management System (NIMS)

The national incident management system provides a consistent nationwide framework and approach to enable government, private sector and non-governmental organizations to work together to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from incidents regardless of their cause, size, location, or complexity. NIMS training is mandated for all emergency service related disciplines such as EMS, hospitals, public health, fire service, law enforcement, public works/utilities, skilled support personnel and other emergency management responders, support and volunteer personnel.

Training sessions are divided into five parts with the first three phases directed at all levels of response personnel and the last two for organizational leaders and staff officers. IS700 is the introduction to NIMS, IS100 is an introduction to the incident management system and IS200 covers the incident management system for single resources including what an incident action plan is. IS300 expands on the incident management system for operational first responders and IS400 addresses advanced incident management including staff duties and operating within a complex incident.

At the completion of each program, participants will be directed on how to access the FEMA on-line testing site and successfully complete the multiple choice written test.
